Why we must Unpack our Emotional Baggage

One of the things that secretly weighs us down and hampers our path to true happiness and wellness, is our emotional baggage. Whether we admit it or not, we all have it. Some of us just do a better job of hiding it away from sight. Baggage that we have collected over the years, sometimes due to reasons beyond our control. Brought into our lives by lost faith, heartbreak, deception and the loss of loved ones. Created by moments when we felt unloved, unworthy, lonely or just foolish. Fortified with bitterness, doubts and distrust. It hides away inside us, controlling our emotions and our responses to the world, never really letting us be ourselves.  What we really need to do, though, is to just eventually unpack our emotional baggage.

When we do unpack our emotional baggage, we allow ourselves to be free of a huge burden of fears and negative thoughts. Letting go of preconceived notions and conditioned responses is not easy, but if we give it a try, who knows where it might lead us. We might discover that the world is actually a much nicer place than we gave it credit for. We might even make friends with some of the people we wouldn’t talk with earlier, because they didn’t fit our preconceived ideas of friendship.

When we stop second guessing our every move and just decide to be, we might discover that some people actually do like us for what we are. What’s more, we might learn that it’s impossible to make everyone like us and that’s alright. Someday, we might even be okay with the idea of taking another stab at love, or something equally difficult. All of this, because we were brave enough to make the effort to unpack our emotional baggage.

How do we unpack our emotional baggage? Here are some simple steps to begin with:

  • Forgive the one who hurt you, without condoning their actions.
  • Forgive yourself for any mistakes you made in your past. Learn from them and move on.
  • Don’t get sucked into the “what ifs”, “if onlys”, “should haves” and “could haves”. Move on.
  • Acknowledge your feelings, then let them out and let them go. Turn them into positive motivation to do something good with your future.

Carrying around emotional baggage is going to hurt nobody but ourselves. Since our primary responsibility should be to take care of our own selves, this in itself should be enough of a reason for us to prioritise clearing up our emotional baggage right away.

  1. Great post Neha. It’s true that we can’t move far by carrying emotional baggage. We need to unload it to make the further journey smooth and gleeful.
